Broken Hill often finds itself on the big screen. In Ted
Kotcheff's Wake in Fright, it was fictionalised as Yabba, the town you
couldn't escape from. Much of Mad Max was shot in Silverton, just outside Broken
Hill. Most recently, one its hotels starred in Priscilla Queen of the Desert. r. |
Mario's Palace Hotel features colourful bushscapes
by Aboriginal artist
Gordon Way (not Charlie Day, as previously written). His murals adorn the interiors of the hotel giving
a trompe l'oeil country air. The owner Mario, from a village near Venice, painted the
Botticelli Venus on the high ceiling. He says he is not an artist, but did the painting
because 'you can do anything once.' |
