| In Stringing Sentences, Hanh Ngô uses a fourteenth century Vietnamese script (cù nom) to inscribe a verse from the classic poem Tale of Kiêu. The early nineteenth century poem of 3,254 lines tells the story of a virtuous daughter who sells herself into prostitution to save her father, but rises above this predicament thanks to her courtly techniques, such as calligraphy and weaving. Hanh Ngôs web of tapestries reflects the demotic luc bát meter in which the poem was written - both sharing the rhythms that would sustain Vietnamese culture on foreign soils. |
