Tram conductors were custodians of Melbourne's soul. They
were replaced by ticket machines, which have proved both unpopular
and inefficient. The previous government's defiance of popular
opinion was punished in the last election, when they were
voted out of office. The incoming Labor government were elected
on the promised they would re-instate 100 tram conductors.
