Statue of Paddy Hannon in Hannon Street, Kalgoorlie, with drinking fountain in bag. Hannon was the first prospector to find gold in Kalgoorlie.
Water was unbelievably dear in the first summer. Even a cup of tea was a luxury. Miners did not wash their clothes in water: they beat them with a stick to remove the red dust. How the plates and knives for cleaned was a question that sensible visitors did not ask when eating their first meal at the camp of a neighbour.
