Hallet Cove in South Australia is a geological
site of international significance. The compressed siltstone at the northern end of Halet
Cove known as Black Cliff was formed 600 years ago and the distinctive scratches show
evidence of an ice sheet that moved through this area 280 million years ago. Nearby
Sugarloaf Hill is composed of sediments desposited in lake formed as the ice sheet melted
about 280 million years ago. |

A capping of alluvial clay covers both Black
Cliff and Sugarloaf Hill and is dated at 2 millions years. The Kaurna People of Fleurieu
Peninsula fashioned stone cutting and grinding tools from the siltstone and sandstone
rocks of this area. |
